The Merchant's House

The Merchant's House in Marlborough, Wiltshire, stands as a unique and tangible artifact of 17th-century domesticity and post-fire reconstruction. Rising from the ashes of a devastating 1653 fire, the house, built by prosperous silk merchant Thomas Bayly, showcases the rebuilding efforts of the era, employing contemporary architectural techniques and reflecting the evolving tastes of the merchant class. There is a shop within the house stocking a wide range of gifts to suit all ages and occasions. The Merchant's House is on the North Side of the High Street approximately 100 yards from the Town Hall.

Accessibility: Due to its age, The Merchant's House has uneven floors and floor level changes throughout. The stairs on the main staircase are shallow but eneven. A stairlift is available from the ground floor to the first floor which allows access to the principal rooms, but the doorframes may not fit a wide wheelchair. Ramps are available on site for wheelchair access on the ground floor and to some of the garden. Call the Merchant's House for further information.
